Athletics Public Relations Internship Correspondent

SMU is now accepting applications for an correspondent in the Office of Athletic Public Relations for the 2018-19 academic year.

SMU sponsors 17 varsity sports and regularly hosts and participates in conference and NCAA Championship events.

The qualified candidate(s) will be challenged to perform at a high level, which will prepare the selected candidate for professional employment in the sports writing/sports information/public relations field. Duties include, but are not limited to: writing previews, recaps, features, awards profiles and other timely stories for the department's official website,, as well as taking part in social media updates/initiatives (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, video previews/highlights, etc.). The candidate will also serve as the sport contact for 1-2 teams.

Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 1-2 years of experience as a sports journalist/athletic communications student assistant or intern (undergraduate or graduate); excellent writing and editing skills; computer knowledge (word processing, statistical programs, desktop publishing); experience with StatCrew inputting preferred; must be able to manage multiple tasks and a schedule that includes long hours/weekends. The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate sound judgment and discretion with sensitive information regarding student-athletes, university staff, and the Athletic Department.

The SMU Athletic Public Relations office uses Adobe Creative Suite, Photoshop, StatCrew Software, Tweetdeck, and SIDEARM Sports for; previous experience with these programs is preferred. Graphic design and/or video editing experience a plus.

A monthly compensation of approximately $1,700 before taxes. Benefits information available Kelly Services.

Start Date: The selected candidate would begin on or about August 1, 2018.
