Director of Athletic Communications

General Information
James Madison University, a Division I Member of the NCAA and Colonial Athletic Association, is seeking a Director of Athletics Communications. This is a full-time, classified exempt salary position with full university benefits.

Duties and Responsibilities
Duties include but are not limited to: coordinating communications, media relations and sports information strategies of JMU Athletics while developing public relations programs with a focus on digital, social and creative media to increase the public's awareness of departmental events and achievements. Position will lead communications strategies for most sport programs (not including football), working directly with specifically-assigned programs while also contributing to strategies for football. Includes supervision of two full-time and one part-time staff members while managing sport program assignments for those staff members, including training and strategy. Planning and scheduling event coverage for SID staff for all sports, home and away. Coordinating or delegating the hiring and management of wage student and gameday personnel. Managing the day-to-day social media, graphic and digital communication tools of the unit with a focus on sport program accounts. Fostering positive relationships with external media partners while identifying opportunities to maximize coverage and proactively position JMU Athletics among local, regional and national media outlets. Working with coaches and other JMU Athletics units to implement communication strategies aligning with departmental vision and guiding principles. Management of Developing communication strategies for other departmental initiatives, such as community involvement, academic endeavors, alumni achievement, etc. Collaborating with all staff (assistant director of digital & social media, director of video content, Assistant A.D. and other communications and external relations staff) on the development of digital, social and creative strategies for branded content across all departmental and sport program social media accounts. Serving as a resource to the Assistant A.D. for Communications with a key role in developing overall strategy for the communications office, including collaborating on planning staff meeting agendas, serving as spokesperson or other applicable duties in the absence of the Assistant A.D. and working with university communications and marketing on various communications initiatives for the university.

Emphasis is placed on constantly-evolving strategies and methods for content and promotion of an athletics program in the current digital age. Successful candidates must be able to work in a team-oriented and collaborative environment with coaches, other athletics staff and external constituents and within the construct of overall departmental communication strategies for all sport programs. Will also provide assistance in numerous other sports and ensure compliance with all relevant institutional, CAA, NCAA rules.

Experience in collegiate athletics communications required; must possess good writing and editing ability; knowledge of AP Style; graphic design (Photoshop); desktop publishing (InDesign); and knowledge of various web software programs, game operations and various Stat Crew statistical programs. Additional experience with Premier Pro, After Affects or other video or design software is also helpful. Candidates must be highly motivated, energetic and be able to manage a work schedule that includes some weekend work. A bachelor's degree is preferred, master's strongly preferred.
