Athletics Communications Assistant

Contract Salary: $30,000 annual with core benefits   

DESCRIPTION: The University of California San Diego is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Athletics Communications Assistant/Game Support. UC San Diego, located in La Jolla, in the San Diego Metropolitan area, enrolls over 35,000 students and is one of the University of California’s 10 campuses. UC San Diego has earned recognition as one of the world’s premier research universities and one of the top-10 public universities in the nation. UC San Diego sponsors 23 varsity sports and currently is an NCAA Division II institution, moving to Division I, Big West conference. Triton Athletics has a proud tradition of academic and athletic excellence. In 2016-17 Triton Athletics won its second straight and seventh overall California Collegiate Athletic Association Commissioner's Cup and placed fourth in the nation in the Learfield Directors' Cup. The incumbent will assist in the Intercollegiate Athletics program, focusing on athletics communications. Assist in the day-to-day operations of the Athletics Communications office for UC San Diego Athletics’ 23 intercollegiate sports, and overall game day operations. The incumbent will be designated as the primary contact for Women’s Basketball, as well as additional sports, depending on experience and the needs of the department. The incumbent must follow the athletic philosophy consistent with that of the UC San Diego Athletic Department and NCAA, and a commitment to diversity in all of its forms.

Duties include writing and compiling (press releases, event previews/notes, post-event recaps, bios, and feature stories). Distributing news, results, statistics, and other information to various constituents. Attending home events and providing game management support. Generating content for and department social media accounts. Graphic design, upkeep of statistics and record books, game management (public address, statistics, scoreboard), award nominations and daily maintenance of as well as social media outlets. Identifying feature stories and pitching to media outlets. Producing game day programs. Compiling accurate statistics and records. Nominating student-athletes and coaches for athletic and academic awards. Organizing photo libraries and assisting with photography shoots. Conducting research for various projects. Assisting in the production of department publications and assisting in special events.

The incumbent must be willing to work frequently non-conventional hours required (including evenings, weekends and holidays).  A complete application will include an online resume, cover letter and three writing samples.

  • Experience using in-game statistical programs, including StatCrew
  • Website management experience 
  • Experience with various social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, etc.) 
  • Comfortable using Adobe Creative Suite software (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator) 
  • Prior experience in a collegiate Athletics Communications/SID office preferred 
  • Photography and video editing skills a plus
