Athletics Marketing & Communications Specialist

(Public Affairs/Communications Specialist II – Exempt)


PURPOSE:
Under the general direction of the Director of Athletics and daily oversight by the Assistant Athletic Director, the Athletic Marketing & Communications Specialist will specialize in creative services, video, social media, website management & enhancement while providing all inclusive coverage of assigned sports, to include media relations, communications, marketing, and game management. Incumbent must be available nights and weekend hours for sports coverage as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
  1. Strategically develop and implement creative marketing content, video, social media and website campaigns for Otter Athletics; produce marketing content for media guides, game programs, news releases, websites, ticket flyers, fund raising flyers, camp brochures, print advertising, radio promos and other campus publications that promote intercollegiate athletics
  2. Serve as primary, day to day contact for assigned sports
  3. Manage home event operations for assigned sports, including the training and direction of student workers and game day staff
  4. Assist in all aspects of department activity in support of coaches and students;  coverage of special events as needed

Other Functions:
Performs other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of: standard theories, practices, principles and techniques related to communications in the public affairs, media, and marketing areas; copyright and other applicable laws pertaining to publications and the media; web communication techniques, vehicles and formats; interview techniques and the ability to define and deliver media messages; marketing and research techniques and methods. Thorough knowledge of and ability to use effectively media outlets including planning media coverage and media publicity campaigns for the university and events.

Skills: Strong story development and journalistic writing skills, as well as advanced editorial skills. Exceptional interpersonal skills, including strong public speaking, listening and interpretive skills.

Ability to: build and manage sophisticated media contacts; keep abreast of campus events and subject matter expertise in relation to current events to identify and capitalize on media opportunities that will promote the university and increase positive media coverage; effectively use web technology to achieve communication goals; analyze and select pertinent facts and integrate them into communication vehicles; apply market research to identify communication needs and target audiences; apply appropriate statistical techniques and methods to research information; and provide lead work direction.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of the fundamentals of public affairs and/or media relations, and/or some exposure to marketing and marketing research. This background normally is obtained through a college degree, which includes relevant coursework in the field, and up to two years of related professional or technical experience. In addition, strong written and verbal communication skills with a solid foundation in grammar, spelling, and the composition of various communication vehicles are essential to initial entry to this classification.

SPECIALIZED SKILLS REQUIRED:
Technology background should include Adobe Creative Suite and Statcrew, or ability to quickly learn.  Must possess and maintain a valid license to drive in the State of California, pass the Defensive Training Class to operate State vehicles, and be insurable under the University's liability coverage. Demonstrated ability to address the essential functions associated with this position including the knowledge and abilities identified above. Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations as they pertain to athletic communications along with NCAA approved statistical procedures

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s degree in related field and previous experience in a collegiate athletics department. Technical fluency with Microsoft Office Suite, Oracle-PeopleSoft/CMS baseline system; Hyperion, or similar report generation software; and Google mail and calendaring.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT & POSITION DESIGNATIONS:
A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with CSUMB. The person holding this position is considered a “mandated reporter” under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

This position will have a duty to report to the Campus Title IX Officer information pertaining to victims of sex discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, dating/domestic violence, and stalking as required by CSU Executive Order 1095.

This position has been designated as a sensitive position with responsibility or access/possession of building master or sub-master keys for building access.

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority, will be required to participate in annual training, and to immediately forward to the Clery Compliance Officer all reports of Clery Act crimes brought to their attention.

Must possess and maintain a valid license to drive in the State of California, pass the Defensive Training Class, and be insurable under the University's liability coverage.

May require occasional evenings and/or weekend work.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. Position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time.  May require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.
SALARY:
