Assistant Athletics Media Relations Director

The University of Virginia is a highly competitive Division I program committed to academic and athletic excellence. The Department of Athletics at the University of Virginia is now accepting applications for the position of Assistant Athletics Media Relations Director to support the Media Relations office. The University, located in Charlottesville, Virginia, is a selective public institution known for its teaching, research, and public service. The University of Virginia sponsors a twenty-seven sport intercollegiate athletics program, which includes approximately 650 student-athletes.

The Assistant Athletics Media Relations Director position exists to provide support for the media relations needs of the Athletics Department and assigned sport programs. The Department of Athletics Media Relations office collects, maintains and distributes information to constituencies in an effort to foster or promote interest in and loyalty toward the Department of Athletics and its mission.

Responsibilities include: exemplary customer service to internal and external constituencies; planning and directing the communication of information to the media through news releases, social media outlets, electronic means and personal contact; working with media representatives at the local, state and national level; event management; supervising student assistants; designing and writing media publications for assigned sports; and providing input for the department's public website, and sport-specific websites, as needed. 

Required qualifications include: a Bachelor's degree, preferably with a major/minor in English, Journalism or Communication; 1-3 years of Athletics Media Relations experience; knowledge of sports programs with the ability to prepare written reports on sport programs so that they are grammatically correct and of professional quality; Demonstrated knowledge of desktop publishing, social media, and the operation of statistical computer programs; Ability to convey information, and/or plans clearly in written format; Ability to demonstrate strong interpersonal skills in interactions with all UVA and Athletics Department staff, outside community including fans, visitors, the press, prospective students, parents, and other constituencies; Strong organizational skills and the ability to supervise student workers; Ability to present a professional demeanor and maintain confidentiality while delivering a high level of internal and external customer service; Some knowledge of computers and software: Microsoft Office, Desktop Publishing, social media applications, and statistical programs. 

Preferred qualifications include: a Master’s degree and 4-7 years’ Athletics Media Relations experience. Experience with Division I level Olympic sports is preferred.
