Athletic Communications Assistant

Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi is seeking applicants for a 10-month internship position beginning August 1, 2017, and continuing through May 31, 2017, with the possibility of a summer extension. Screening of applications will begin immediately.

School/Area Description
Texas A&M – Corpus Christi is a proud member of NCAA Division I and the Southland Conference supporting 16 intercollegiate sports. The Islanders have won conference championships in women’s golf, men’s tennis, women’s tennis, women’s cross country, softball, volleyball and men’s basketball. The school, located on Ward Island, is home to over 12,000 students.

Corpus Christi is the eighth-largest city in Texas with a population of just over 300,000. The average annual temperature is 71.2 degrees and there are, on average, 255 days of sunshine yearly. The city is approximately two hours from San Antonio, three hours from Austin and 3 ½ hours from Houston. The Corpus Christi area boasts 120 miles of Gulf Coast beaches, and it is the second-most popular vacation spot in Texas.

Job Description
Serve as the primary media relations contact for several sports, likely baseball and 2-3 other sports. Produce press releases and original website content for primary sports in addition to assisting with game operations. Create publications for primary sports, including record books. Maintain statistics and archives.

Position will also direct social media for primary sports as well as create graphics, videos and other visual elements. Guide a team of student workers in office and on game day. Other duties as assigned by Assistant AD for Communications.

Qualifications & Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in sport management, journalism, communications or a related field required. Successful applicants should have at least 1-2 years as a student worker or intern in athletic media relations at the college athletics level, or suitable experience in a related field. Prior experience with Stat Crew software, graphic design and video editing a plus. Strong written and verbal communications skills as well as computer abilities are essential. Position requires working nights and weekends and travel with assigned teams. Applicants that are interested in pursuing a career in the athletics communications field are best-suited.

Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Adobe Premier/Final Cut, Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign/Photoshop), StatCrew, web publishing is preferred.
