Senior Coordinator, Communications


Reports To
Director, Communications

Position Summary
The Senior Coordinator, Sports Communications handles all soccer information activities for Major League Soccer and Soccer United Marketing.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Oversee soccer-related information flow for the Communications group including:
    • In conjunction with Director, Communications, manage creation, editing and distribution of appropriate press releases and informational documents
    • Support with editing and proofing for MLS publications
    • Manage MLS Newsstand daily articles compilation and distribution
  • Build relationships with and oversee sphere of soccer beat reporters
  • Serve as the key stakeholder for select broadcast partners
  • Respond to media requests for information and to facilitate media interviews
  • Manage updating the Media Resources page.
  • Assist in creation of talking points on key soccer-related topices

Internal Communications
  • Serve as one of the League’s main contacts with team public relations departments, including providing guidance on external communications and collaboration on media opportunities
  • Build and foster collaborative relationships with Events, Operations, Player Personnel and Competition departments to stay informed and abreast of new initiatives, program and other organization wide events

Event Public Relations Responsibilities
Day-to-day management of the public relations (including media operations and accreditation) for the following MLS Events:
  • Player Combine
  • SuperDraft
  • All-Star Game
    • Including the All-Star Game voting process
  • MLS Cup
    • Including year-end awards voting and communication

Additional Responsibilities
  • In conjunction with Director, Communications, monitor all clubs’ adherence to MLS Media Access guidelines
  • Oversee monthly Media Recap (print and electronic) in all three official League languages (English, Spanish and French) and work closely with the Senior Manager, Corporate Communications to support analytics
  • Oversee upkeep of media email distribution lists
  • Oversee upkeep of Master Media List and coordinate mass mailings (March to Soccer, All-Star, MLS Cup, other)
  • Monitor assigned MLS matches on weekday and weekend nights
  • Manage relationships with outside vendors
    • USA Today Sports Images (beginning with new agreement)
    • Lyris
    • Ardian
    • SportsSystems
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 3-5+ years of experience in public relations/sports information

  • Knowledge of and passion for Major League Soccer 
  • Superior organization, project management skills and attention to detail

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate, both written and verbally
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Demonstrated decision making and problem solving skills
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines with minimal supervision
  • Ability to travel and to work non-traditional hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays

Desired Skills:
  • Knowledge of the sport of soccer
  • Knowledge and experience in sports business
